My name is Malu Foley, I’m 18 years old and I’m from Albuquerque, New Mexico but I’m currently attending school at UConn so it has been fun to find new ways to train here!
I have been a dancer since I was three but I began Equestrian Vaulting (gymnastics and dance on moving horseback) when I was seven years old. Through vaulting, I have trained in gymnastics, ballet, capoeira, rock climbing, yoga, acro, and finally obstacle course training.
How long have you been obstacle course training?
About a year!
Why obstacle training?
Initially, I simply took a class for a fun team building activity. We loved it so much that we returned each week to perfect or learn a new skill. For me personally, having something that was athletically challenging was new, and I liked the way it made me think of new ways to accomplish my goals.
Why compete? Motivation?
I am a naturally competitive person, so I jumped at the opportunity to throw myself into this intense yet fun environment. My motivation essentially comes from wanting to conquer myself, but also from wanting to support a community of athletes who are all working hard together.
Favorite obstacle? Least favorite obstacle?
My favorite obstacle is the devil steps but my least favorite is the spinning log.
Personal interests (movies, hobbies, music, books, charities, etc.)?
My favorite movies are Interstellar and Pan’s Labyrinth. I enjoy Equestrian Vaulting, hiking, swimming, snowboarding, and traveling and practicing with my school’s kick line team. I listen to all types of music (no, literally anything). Outside of athletics, I am involved in Gamma Phi Beta and our philanthropy, Girls on the Run as well as Conn’s Student Government.
Something interesting about you?
My name means peaceful in Hawaiian!
Motto or how you live your life?
Some days you just have to create your own sunshine!
Piece of advice for obstacle course training?
As cheesy as it is, don’t give up! You will overcome the obstacle on the try after you think you can’t do it anymore, I promise.
