Dakota Phillips – Backyard course, UW-Whitewater

Here we have competitor Dakota, age 20, Monroe, WI

Athletic background?  I played football from 2nd to 9th grade, I was on swim team from 2nd to 9th grade, and did 4 years of high school track and field. During my senior year of track I was a captian. That year we also won the Wisconsin State track meet and my 4×200 relay broke the school record.

How long obstacle course training?  2 years

Why obstacle training?   I love to try new obstacles and it has never felt like training for me just playing.

Why compete?  Motivation?  I have been watching the show since Sasuke in Japan and have always wanted to try. Since being in college there have been a lot of people saying you can be whatever you want to be in life so I decided I wanted to be a ninja.

Favorite obstacle?  Least favorite obstacle?  My favorite is anything that swings, beast balls, ropes, rings etc. my least favorite would be whatever takes me out. Probably the salmon ladder because it’s one of the obstacles I have built and train on at home but it was taken me out twice while competing.

Personal interests (movies, hobbies, music, books, charities, etc.)?  I enjoy reading comic books and watching all of the superhero TV shows, movies, and cartoons. I am also a RA (Resident Assistant) at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, as well as the head coordinator for the Nursing Home Visitation Program here on campus.

Something interesting about you?  I will be testing the course for this season of American Ninja Warrior in Indianapolis.

Motto or how you live your life?  “The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it” Chinese Proverb

Piece of advice for obstacle course training?   Don’t be afraid to fall. Even the best have. Learn from it, try again, and keep getting better.
