Here we have competitor Dominic, age 34, Whittier, CA
Athletic background? In my youth I got into extreme sports starting with BMX dirt jumping , racing & flatland. By high school I was transition into track and field while doing street skateboarding. Did 2 demos for Active ride shop in San Dimas and Santa Monica. I dropped skateboarding after suffering too many knee/wrist injuries by end of senior year high school of 2000. Now taking an interest in rock climbing, calisthenics besides obstacle course races.
How long obstacle course training? Started obstacle course training since summer of 2013. That same year of Dec 2013 I did my first Spartan Sprint in Malibu, CA.
Why obstacle training? Events such as Spartan Races or Tough Mudder are similar to military training as a U.S. Marine.
Why compete? Motivation? As a runner, one of my favorite mentors Steve Prefontaine said it best, “When people go to a track meet, they’re looking for something, a world record, something that hasn’t been done before. You get all this magnetic energy, people focusing on one thing at the same time. I really get excited about it. It makes me want to compete even more. It makes it all worthwhile, all the hours of hard work.” In a sense to any physical competition whether it be running, ninja warrior, obstacle course races… we all have the same desire and goal… Self satisfaction and sense of achievement!
Favorite obstacle? Least favorite obstacle? Feeling really confident on any obstacle involving upper body strength or endurance. Least favorite are likely to be any balance obstacle haha
Personal interests (movies, hobbies, music, books, charities, etc.)? When not training, I attend to my video games. When not training for video game tournaments, I like to hangout w/ friends and watch movies or solo. When not doing that, hangout at Downtown Disney enjoying my coffee or tea or at ESPN catching up on sports. If not doing that either, then reading anything from Dan Brown. Then for those hot summer days, spending my time at Huntington Beach riding my short surfboard. However, what I really enjoy most of all is attending San Diego Comic Con with my nerdy friends. Love collecting anything Batman related considering he is my childhood hero, icon and fictional mentor!
Something interesting about you? I am a former professional gamer in the FGC (Fighting Game Community) competing since 2003. Basically I like to compete on any 1v1 fighting games such as any Street Fighter series, Marvel vs Capcom 2/3, and Mortal Kombat. Occasionally I’ll be found at major tournaments as a TO (Tournament Organizer) coordinating and organizing events. Events such as NorCal Regionals, SoCal Regionals, West Coast Warzone and Evo Championship I can always be found unless military duty prevents me from attending any of these or ninja warrior competitions.
Motto or how you live your life? Hmmmm… don’t really have a motto haha
Piece of advice for obstacle course training? Best advice is to know yourself and seek self improvement. By doing so you’re building a strong foundation of knowing your strengths and weaknesses.
