Rachel Uomini – APEX Movement NorCal

Here we have competitor Rachel, age 16, Berkeley, California.

Athletic background?  I have been athletic my entire life, but have only seriously gotten into sports since the beginning of high school when I started in competitive gymnastics. Since then, I have also been involved in rock climbing and parkour, which help me a lot with obstacle training.

How long obstacle course training?  I have been obstacle course training for about 6 months.

Why obstacle training?   Obstacle training allows me to push my limits and do things I never imagined I was even capable of doing. I love looking back at my progress and seeing how far I have come with my physical abilities.

Why compete?  Motivation?  I am a naturally competitive person, but most of all I strive to compete primarily against myself.  Seeing how far I have gone and what’s next to come motivates me to train even harder. I also love the incredible support within the Ninja Warrior community, and especially seeing other strong female competitors inspires me to push myself farther.

Favorite obstacle?  Least favorite obstacle?  My favorites are anything with laches! My least favorite obstacle would have to be either the salmon ladder or the warped wall.

Personal interests (movies, hobbies, music, books, charities, etc.)?  Anything athletic! I will try any sport once and I will probably enjoy it 🙂 I also really like playing music, especially the violin.

Something interesting about you?  I can recite fifty digits of pi at lightning speed, from memory.

Motto or how you live your life?  Always respect yourself and your body. Eat well, train hard, laugh a lot, and generally have fun with your life. What you put in is what you get out, so prioritize your health and well-being.

Piece of advice for obstacle course training?   Be confident! There is no way you will be able to complete an obstacle if you don’t believe you can. Running the course is at least 50% mental, so have confidence in your abilities and you will inevitably succeed in one way or another. And have fun with it!
