Here we have competitor Daniel, age 28, from Albuquerque, NM.
Athletic background? I played baseball growing up, I also skateboarded starting at the age of 12 and had done that for 15 years.
How long obstacle course training? I have been obstacle training for a 2 years now first doing a lot of upper body strength, and the past year training really hard at Ninja Park.
Why obstacle training? Growing up I was always able to climb well and had a lot of endurance so I wanted to test my skills to ninja obstacles and now I train hard because it’s become a big passion of mine.
Why compete? In the beginning of 2011 I was in a accident where I was t-boned in my work truck in an intersection. My left foot was crushed between a side step in the truck. When I was home recovering I would try and find something good to watch on TV. I stumbled across Japan’s Ninja Warrior which had a marathon on G4. I instantly became a fan of it. When watching the American Ninja Warrior I would also say to my family “I bet I could do that” well finally they said I should do it then. So, that’s what started my training for Ninja obstacles.
Motivation? I find ninja obstacles are a great way to challenge yourself mentally and overcome goals that you might not be capable of doing at first. I find myself loving to help others and give advice on obstacles whenever I can and watching them do it always puts a smile on my face.
Favorite obstacle? Least favorite obstacle? My favorite obstacle is the Ultimate Cliffhanger because I enjoy doing it but at the same time it can be very challenging. I have a lot of respect for the grip strength you have to have and this obstacle definitely can test your limits especially when your exhausted.
The one obstacle that I haven’t overcome is the Spider Flip. I still have a mental block to complete this one. I know I’m capable of doing it just haven’t completed it yet.
Personal interests (movies, hobbies, music, books, charities, etc.)? I am that kind of guy who stays extremely busy with a lot of hobbies. I’m into cars with my firebird and pathfinder. I’m out off roading or also fixing something on both of them. I also am in a band which takes a lot of my time. My band Modus has done some amazing things like opened up for Trapt, Highly Suspect, Otherwise and many other successful bands. I work out 3 times a week at a gym doing cardio and lifting weights while adding 2 times a week doing obstacles. I also spend a lot of time with many long time friends so staying home watching TV is not an option for me.
Something interesting about you? I am one those type of people once I get myself into something I try doing it a 100%. I am also that type of person who loves to help others and never ask for help but sometimes you have to if you can’t do it alone.
Motto or how you live your life? I believe you have to earn your accomplishments. It’s not just giving to you.
Piece of advice for obstacle course training? The biggest thing about obstacles is never think you can’t do it. Yes, there are physical and mental challenges to each one but train hard and practice proper technique.
